Over the years, Afvalzorg has provided different consultancy services in the Basque Country, working hand in hand with the local authorities or assisting landfill owners with landfill management-related issues.
Nowadays we are in charge of the landfill gas recovery system of the Urruzuno landfill in Elgoibar, which Afvalzorg also designed. This is a former landfill where an industrial area was constructed on top of it. After the construction of the buildings, it was discovered that the top cover system was not properly working. This caused risky situations in the past due to the accumulation of landfill gas underneath the building’s premises. However, after the implementation of the landfill gas recovery system designed by Afvalzorg, this risk has been mitigated.
We visit the site periodically for maintenance and to perform monitoring measurements. The good performance of the landfill gas recovery system allows us to minimise the landfill gas emissions towards the nearby building complex. Additionally, we have installed a biofilter that is used for methane oxidation, contributing to emission reduction.
