The municipal council of Montfoort approved unanimously the plans for the Energy Garden at a former landfill site in Mastwijk. Landfill owner Afvalzorg, together with local residents and The Nature and Environment Federation Utrecht (NMU), have joined forces to pursuit a common goal: turning a once contaminated site back into a valuable area. The landfill will become an Energy Garden where sustainable energy is combined with public nature, extensive recreation and education.
The Energy Garden includes a solar park of ca. 10-12 hectares that will provide sustainable energy for about 60% of the Montfoort households. Several recreational walking paths are considered in the design and a variety of vegetation will be included giving an ecological boost to the flora and fauna in the area.
At Afvalzorg, we have the social commitment and necessary expertise to transform former landfill sites back into a cherished area. Combining our knowledge in soil remediation, sustainable solutions and landscape development, the possibilities for landscape redesign are endless. If everything goes according to plan, the actual design of the Energy Garden will start at the end of 2021.
