Capped and/or closed landfills provide an excellent opportunity for the realisation of solar parks. The existing infrastructure can be leveraged for a long-term, lucrative solar project, thereby extending the use and worth of the area. These solar energy projects can also offset existing environmental costs or form an integrated part of a regional ‘green’ redevelopment plan.
Landfill sites that already have landfill gas utilisation projects are in the best position to transition to solar projects. Those sites have pre-existing infrastructure that can connect to a nearby grid, thereby mitigating any issues with regard to grid connection, while allowing them to continue serving as an energy source.
In project development it is also of upmost importance to communicate with both internal and external stakeholders to smooth the path forward. Afvalzorg already developed several large scale solar parks on landfills allowing for a quick analysis for project opportunities under various conditions, and assist in realisation of large scale solar parks.
