Landfills are particularly well suited to the generation of renewable energy without having a detrimental effect on other activities. Renewable energy production creates an excellent basis on which to build a sustainable and valuable project and/or second life for your landfill site.
Landfill owners can receive revenue from the sale of landfill gas to a direct end user or pipeline, or from the sale of electricity generated from landfill gas to the local power grid. In addition to this revenue from renewable energy certificates, tax credits and incentives, and greenhouse gas emissions trading systems may provide additional revenues. All these potential revenue sources can help to improve landfill management technically and financially.
As with landfill gas recovery and utilisation, the installation of solar panels or wind turbines at, or in the vicinity of, landfill sites offer a way of generating income from a (partly) capped and/or closed landfill site.
