Since 2017, Afvalzorg and TNO Caribbean have been working together on assisting the Government of Aruba in the transition to sustainable waste management on the island. Due to the relatively small-scale waste treatment facilities on the island, and Aruba’s geographic isolation from end markets for, affordable waste management is proving to be a challenge.
Afvalzorg is providing technical and legal expertise on the closure and remediation of the Parkietenbos landfill facility and on the construction of a new sanitary landfill site.
Key elements are:
- Implementation of international landfill standards and best practices.
- Remediation of the Parkietenbos landfill facility to minimise any negative impact on the environment.
- Redevelopment of the old landfill site into a useful landscape. Possible installation of a solar park and extraction of landfill gas to provide opportunities for joint funding of the remediation.
- Construction of a new sanitary landfill for hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.
